Chinoiserie, Blossom & Papillon
The emergence of Chinese wallpaper occurred as part of a Europe wide trend around 1740-1765. Initially they would have been wood block prints which were then hand painted. The Chinese would not have used the panoramic wallpaper as we know it in the West in their homes. It was designed as a European commodity. By 1765-1790 these wallpapers would have been entirely hand painted and at the same time the fashion for scenic wallpapers had been revived. It was at this point Chinese wallpapers became truly panoramic, as branches would flow from one panel into the next, producing altogether more sophisticated work.
From the original wallpaper we have created a Panorama and two beautiful complimentary repeat patterns, Papillon & Blossom.
